Our 2017 Week a Year (WAY) tour is our seventh fundraising bike ride, making our way in week-long segments from Maine to Florida along the entire East Coast Greenway. This year’s tour also joins in on our two-month long East Coast River Relay, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the East Coast Greenway!

The 2017 tour will roll from Wilmington, NC, to Savannah, GA, from October 7 – 13. Forty riders led by ECGA staff will experience beautiful beaches in North Carolina, historic Charleston, the scenic Low Country of South Carolina and Georgia, and some of our newest trail segments. Our Greenway is still a work in progress, and we have fewer miles of completed trail in parts of the South compared to other regions. Most of this year’s tour will be on roadways, but we’ll do all we can to make this a safe and enjoyable ride. Questions? Write to us at

Tour Dates: October 7 – 13. Riders are encouraged to be in Wilmington by early afternoon on Saturday, October 7. We will have a pre-tour meeting and a group dinner hosted by the ECGA. The first riding day of the tour is Sunday, October 8. The tour will arrive mid-afternoon in Savannah on Oct. 13. A shuttle will be available for riders who wish to return to Wilmington at that time.

Distance: The tour is approximately 385 miles total, with an average of 65 miles per day and longest day around 85 miles. We will provide shuttles to shorten the two 80+ mileage days.

Approximate Mileage Per Day
Oct. 8: Wilmington to Ocean Isle, ~ 70 miles
Oct. 9: Ocean Isle to Myrtle Beach, ~49 miles
Oct. 10: Myrtle Beach to Georgetown, ~45 miles
Oct. 11: Georgetown to Charleston, ~85 miles
Oct. 12: Charleston to Beaufort, ~81 miles
Oct. 13: Beaufort to Savannah, ~54 miles

To participate in this tour, riders must be able to average 10 miles per hour for up to 70 miles per day. Experience riding bicycles in a group on roadways with vehicle traffic is required. This tour is not recommended for beginning cyclists.

Tour conditions: Mostly flat. Road bikes will be fine on all sections. Route is predominately on roadways, but does include some scenic greenway sections. There are many water crossings in this area, and most do not have separated bicycle facilities. Weather can vary with some rainy and/or hot days.

Lodging and Meals: Participants cover their hotel and most meal costs. We will provide a list of hotels where we have a discounted room block. We can try to match riders up with a roommate if they wish. Riders do not have to stay in the hotel where we have a block, but that is where the truck will drop off and pick up luggage each day.

The ECGA will host a dinner the first and last nights of the tour for all riders. We will provide restaurant suggestions for other meals. Breakfast is included with most hotels.

Logistics: Cue sheets with daily directions (from hotel to hotel) will be provided to riders prior to the start of the tour. We also encourage riders to utilize the ECG Trip Planner to get familiar with our route.

Support: A bicycle mechanic who has supported our tours for the past five years will be joining us for the 2017 WAY tour. A truck will bring everyone’s gear to the hotels each night, and we will have a SAG wagon to provide additional support.

Registration Fee: $100 per person. Priority Registration for previous riders begins March 1. Public registration begins April 17.

Late Registration: $150 per person after June 15 if there are still openings.

Shuttle Fee (optional): $75 per person. Shuttle is available to take riders and their luggage after the tour from Savannah to Wilmington.

Fundraising/Donation Amount: $1,000 minimum. Our Week a Year Tours serve as our largest fundraisers, with funds supporting development of the East Coast Greenway. For those who wish to fundraise, we provide an online fundraising platform and can help you set it up. Those who exceed the minimum donation or fundraising goal win prizes.

Your fundraising helps spread the word about the East Coast Greenway. Friends and family who donate $25 or more will receive a year’s membership to the East Coast Greenway Alliance.
