Connecticut Committee for the East Coast Greenway

The Connecticut Committee for the ECG is extremely active in advocating for local trails and greenways. These volunteers coordinate route selection and undertake our advocacy efforts to move the Greenway ahead in the state. By building support and partnerships with citizens, public agencies and organizations at the local and state levels, the Connecticut Committee is helping to get the ECG on the ground, mile by mile.

Volunteers explore potential routing between two segments of the Charter Oak Greenway

News & Events

• May 2008 - Connecticut's Hop River Trail seeing surface improvements and ECG signage this year

Communities along the Hop River Trail (13 miles, Windham to Bolton) have been improving the trail's dirt surface, and work should continue through the year. So far, nearly half of the trail has been improved to meet ECG surface standards in the towns of Bolton and Andover. We've gotten word that the town of Columbia will start improvements on its section of the trail later this year. We will also see ECG trail markers installed on the upgraded portions of the Hop River Trail this year, courtesy of CT's Department of Environmental Protection.

• May 2008 – ECGA Ambassador Steve Mitchell receives Greenways Award from Governor Rell

Some of our current goals in Connecticut include:

• Post ECG signage along the on- and off-road route through Hartford
• Get approval to post signage on the interim on-road ECG route on CT state roads

Support the Effort in Connecticut

The Connecticut Committee consists entirely of volunteers who dedicate their time and resources to advocate for the creation of local trails. Please help the Committee create the ECG in Connecticut by volunteering your time, becoming a member or sponsoring a mile of trail.

Recent accomplishments in Connecticut include:

• New surfacing was constructed for portions of the Hop River Trail
• ECG signs were installed along the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail in Simsbury, Avon, and Farmington
• ECG signs were installed along upgraded portions of the Hop River Trail and Moosup Valley Trail

The CT Committee currently needs volunteers to:

• Contact elected officials, urging them to support the East Coast Greenway
• Travel the ECG route and field-proof the cue sheets
• Help ECGA staff install ECG trail markers
