When to go

Seasonal temperatures vary from the coast to inland, but in general summer average highs are in the mid to upper 80s and winter average lows are in the upper 20s to mid 30s. Spring and fall are pleasant, with beautiful foliage in the fall.

Traveling through downtown Hartford and New Haven; Hartford’s Bushnell park, the first public park in the U.S.; communities along the Long Island Sound in southwest CT; the “Last Green Valley” in eastern CT – the most rural area between Boston and DC, where preserved farmland and forest abound.

The completed trail segments in Connecticut can accommodate a variety of users, as listed in the table below. However, because 75% of the route through Connecticut is still on road, we recommend that only experienced road bicyclists plan to travel the entire route. We will provide more details about the non-designated segments as soon as possible.

These trails have been officially designated as part of the East Coast Greenway. There are other completed trails along the Connecticut route that have not yet been designated. Please consult our Google maps and cue sheets for more detailed information on the route.

In-line skaters: Trail conditions are variable, and even paved portions aren’t always smooth. We have attempted to note portions that are questionable for skating, but please be prepared to walk or go around certain portions of trail.

The Connecticut East Coast Greenway passes through 5 counties and 34 municipalities as it travels from Rhode Island to New York.

  • Counties: Windham, Tolland, Hartford, New Haven, Fairfield
  • Municipalities include: Sterling, Plainfield, Killingly, Putnam, Windham, Willimantic, Manchester, East Hartford, Hartford, Simsbury, Avon, Farmington, Southington, Hamden, Cheshire, New Haven, West Haven, Bridgeport, Norwalk, Greenwich
Horses and cyclists share the Hop River Trail.

Navigation Tools

  • Signs – ECG signage is posted along many completed segments in Connecticut. Use them to ensure you are on the right route, but pay close attention to your guide and cue sheets as signage is not available in all locations.
  • Maps – Google maps of the route in Connecticut are excellent for trip planning.
  • Cue sheets – these turn-by-turn directions are a handy and easy way to navigate the route in Connecticut.
