Riding alongside Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay

Riding alongside Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay

Honoring waterways, celebrating connections

As the signature event and grand finale of the East Coast Greenway Alliance’s 25th-anniversary celebrations, the East Coast River Relay will be the largest program in our organization’s history. The River Relay will be a series of organized walks, runs, and bike rides along the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway from Calais, Maine, to Key West, Florida, from August through early November 2017.

The Relay features a variety of public events: some large, with hundreds of people biking a Greenway segment alongside a river; some small, as in a class of schoolchildren walking the Greenway for a mile and testing water quality. The Relay will also include traditional river clean-up and trail maintenance events, local festivals, and other awareness events along the East Coast Greenway.

With the River Relay, the East Coast Greenway Alliance aims to raise greater awareness of the Greenway as a key linear park offering access to nature for the 60 million people living in our corridor. Goals for the East Coast River Relay include:

  • engaging 10,000 people directly through River Relay events by cycling, running, walking, or participating in educational programming, and
  • building stronger relationships with allies in the environmental community, especially individuals and organizations focused on waterways.

Our partners thus far in the East Coast River Relay include the William Penn Foundation, Quimby Family Foundation, and Dan River Basin Association.
