Maine to DC ![]() Leonard P. (Chip) Jahnke DOB--10/3/37 Wife - Liga Volmars Jahnke, native of Riga, Latvia Children - two girls and a boy As one of two sons of a Naval officer, I spent my grade school and high school years in a number of locations in the eastern US. I always had an interest in outdoor activities and organized athletics, participating during school years in scouting, football, basketball, baseball and swimming. Following high school, I spent three years in the US Marine Corps stationed on the east and west coasts. Following my service in the Marines, I worked and pursued my education, receiving a BS in Agriculture in '67 from UConn. I remained at UConn for two more years pursuing my Masters degree in civil engineering. I went directly from UConn to the engineering firm now known as Fuss & O'Neill, Inc. where I spent 28 years and retired as a partner in 1997. Currently my wife and I are co-owners of Harbor Hill Bed and Breakfast in Friendship, ME. Throughout my adult life I have pursued various outdoor activities including SCUBA diving, cross-country skiing, fishing, summer and winter backpacking, mountaineering and, of course, cycling. Combining an interest in travel with these activities has resulted in such events such as an attempt to climb Mt. McKinley in Alaska in 1996 and a cultural exchange trip to South Africa in 1998, sponsored by People to People International, with a group of physical fitness enthusiasts to promote fitness in various ways and, in particular, cycling. Part of this trip was a 65 mile bicycle race around the Cape of Good Hope. I have been a bicyclist for essentially all of my life. In the late '80s, my son's cycling activities and encouragement spurred me to purchase an upscale road bike. The following year I obtained a USCF license, and I raced for a number of years. I have continued to maintain a high level of interest in cycling over the years. During the years I was racing, I served for three years as president of the Capital Velo Club in Glastonbury, CT, using that platform to promote racing, recreational cycling and cycling trails. In 2000 I participated in the WAVE, an ECG promotional event, the centerpiece of which was carrying a container of water from the Gulf of Mexico at Key West, FL to Calais, ME and then on to St. Johns, New Brunswick, Canada. I was one of the water carriers in both Maine and Canada. Why am I volunteering for the "Taking the Message to Washington" ride? I hope the information above speaks for itself. I am an avid cyclist and outdoorsman who feels the ECG provides an excellent oppurtunity for people of all ages and physical conditions to combine an enjoyable outside experience with fitness and health. Our nation needs the Greenway, and I want to do my part to help bring it better and faster. |
