User Types Accommodated
All of the completed trail segments in New Jersey can accommodate a variety of users, as listed in the table below. However, because 52% of the route through New Jersey is still on road, we recommend that only experienced road bicyclists plan to travel the entire route. Many of the interim on-road segments are on safe, neighborhood roads with sidewalks. We will provide more details about these segments as soon as possible.
Equestrians enjoy the D&R Canal Towpath.
Designated Trail Details
These trails have been officially designated as part of the East Coast Greenway. There are other completed trails along the route that have not yet been designated. Please consult our Google maps and cue sheets for more detailed information on the route.
NOTE: Please contact the trail management agency or friends group with questions concerning trail access for individuals with disabilities.
In-line skaters: Trail conditions are variable, and even paved portions aren’t always smooth. We have attempted to note portions that are questionable for skating, but please be prepared to walk or go around certain portions of trail.

Horses are permitted throughout the entire towpath on the Main Canal -- Landing Lane through Mulberry Street in Trenton.
A portion of the towpath will be closed in April (from Amwell Road to the Manville Causeway) due to construction of a pedestrian bridge connecting D&R Canal State Park with Colonial Park in Franklin Township (Somerset County).

Counties and municipalities along the route
The New Jersey East Coast Greenway will meander through six counties and 27 municipalities as it links to the Pennsylvania Greenway segment at Trenton and with the New York segment at Jersey City.
- Hudson County: Jersey City, Secaucus, Kearney, East Newark, Harrison
- Essex County: Newark
- Union County: Elizabeth, Hillside, Union Township, Kenilworth, Springfield, Cranford, Winfield, Clark, Rahway
- Middlesex County: Woodbridge, Edison, Highland Park, Piscataway, New Brunswick, Plainsboro Township, South Brunswick
- Somerset County: Franklin Township, South Bound Brook
- Mercer County: Princeton Township, Lawrence, Trenton
The Husdon River Waterfront Walkway in Jersey City is the first trail segment in NJ when entering from the north.
Navigation Tools
- Signs – ECG signage is posted along many completed segments in New Jersey. Use them to ensure you are on the right route, but pay close attention to your guide and cue sheets as signage is not available in all locations.
- Guides – the New Jersey Multi-Use Trail Guide is the best tool for traveling through New Jersey. It provides maps, turn-by-turn directions, and information about amenities. Map 11 of this guide does not identify New Jersey County Routes 505 and 501. Please download a corrected map.
- Maps – Google maps of the route in NJ are excellent for trip planning.
- Cue sheets – these turn-by-turn directions are a handy and easy way to navigate the route in NJ.
ECG trail markers are posted along many of the completed segments in New Jersey.
