Highlights

Virginia is a large state, with differences in the climate in different parts of the state; the ECG passes through the Piedmont and Tidewater regions.  In general, temps in July and August average in the 80s and summers are humid. January is the coldest, with high temps averaging in the upper 30s to low 40s. Winter doesn’t last very long, and spring and fall are pleasant. Heavy rains are common during hurricane season.

User Types Accommodated

The completed trail segments in Virginia can accommodate a variety of users, as listed in the table below. However, because the bulk of the route through the state is still on road, we recommend that only experienced road bicyclists plan to travel the entire route. We will provide more details about the non-designated segments as soon as possible.

Designated Trail Details

These trails have been officially designated as part of the East Coast Greenway. There are other completed trails along the Pennsylvania route that have not yet been designated. Please consult our Google maps and cue sheets for more detailed information on the route.

NOTE: Please contact the trail management agency or friends group with questions concerning trail access for individuals with disabilities.

In-line skaters: Trail conditions are variable, and even paved portions aren’t always smooth. We have attempted to note portions that are questionable for skating, but please be prepared to walk or go around certain portions of trail.
