“We just love walking. It’s just like the way of life for us. It’s simple, it’s easy. You have so many opportunities and possibilities each and every day.”

Relive the East Coast Greenway adventure of Matt and Grace Grooms, perhaps better known as The Golden Road. The couple, along with their dogs Nemo and Foxi, departed Calais, Maine, on April 20, 2023, and walked the in-development Greenway route for the next 235 days, ultimately reaching Key West, Florida, and the southernmost point of the continental United States, on Dec. 11, 2023.

Matt and Grace experienced the amazing, completed sections of the East Coast Greenway, as well as the high-stress, on-road sections of the interim route. Along the way, they gained an appreciation for the complexities of developing a multi-jurisdictional trail connecting 450 communities.

“People donating to the East Coast Greenway is huge for getting more and more trails connected, which is going to give everyone way more access,” Matt says.

If you are inspired by Matt and Grace's adventure, we encourage long-distance travelers to explore the 250-mile, nearly completed stretch of the East Coast Greenway between New Haven, Connecticut, and Boston. Stay tuned for more resources that will assist long-distance travelers planning a trip on this section of the route.
